Officials in Binh Phuoc Province, southern Vietnam are set to develop a French-era airport into a special-use airport spanning some 350 hectares.
The provincial People’s Committee at a meeting on Tuesday decided to set up a steering committee in charge of the airport planning and a working team to assist the steering committee.
The 350ha Hon Quan special-use airport is designed to be located in Tan Loi Commune, Hon Quan District.
Tran Tue Hien, chairwoman of the Binh Phuoc People’s Committee, underlined the importance of the airport development.
She asked relevant units to closely cooperate to execute the project.
She also requested that the Binh Phuoc Military Command collect and consider feedback on the project at the meeting and make sure that the planning will take place as scheduled.
Previously, the Ministry of National Defense endorsed a plan converting the Technique Hon Quan military airport into a special-use one following the provincial administration’s proposal.
The ministry also asked the provincial government to incorporate this airport project into their master plan.
The Technique Hon Quan airport, currently under the management of the Vietnamese military, was built by the French to serve its colonial exploitation.
During the war in Vietnam, U.S. troops used the airport to serve military activities.
