A militiaman drowned during his participation in a river clean-up in Dong Thap Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, on Tuesday.

A local official confirmed on Wednesday that the accident occurred after a river clean-up event, which was held by local authorities at 7:00 am on Tuesday using boats supplied by residents, in the Tien (Front) River in Dong Thap’s Cao Lanh City.

The report on the incident showed that H.N., a 19-year-old militiaman, and D.V.T., 21, were in charge of rowing a boat back to its owner after the event finished.

The boat sank during the trip and N. could not swim.

T. tried to save him to no avail.

Rescuers took N. ashore and rushed him to a hospital at 9:45 am, but he died on the way.

Representatives of the local authorities visited and comforted the family of the victim after the drowning, according to the local official.

The family also received financial support worth VND5 million (US$217) from the authorities, who will cover the expenses for N.’s funeral as well.
