A sixth-grade boy successfully saved two younger children from drowning in a stream in Gia Lai Province, located in Vietnam's Central Highlands region, over the weekend, a local official said on Tuesday.
Siu Sam Ban, a sixth-grade student of Nguyen Du Elementary and Middle School in Gia Lai’s Chu Se District, saw Siu Si On, 6, and Kpuih Nhan, 9, struggling in a stream on his way home after farming at around noon on Saturday.
Ban immediately jumped into the water and swam toward the two boys.
The sixth grader, who is praised by his teacher for physical strength and good swimming skills, took one child ashore first, and then returned to the aid of the other.
He waited until the two children regained their strength and took them to their home.
Pham Van Hoang, head of the Chu Se Office of Education and Training, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday afternoon that local authorities have planned to visit Ban and honor him for his act of bravery.
Ban’s case is noteworthy given his family’s difficult situation, leaving him to walk around seven kilometers between home and school unless his friends offer a ride.
He typically helps his parents with farming after school like many other underprivileged children in the Central Highlands region.
He often catches fishes in local streams, resulting in his proficient swimming abilities.
