Nearly 500 people from 40 agencies in Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, participated in a fire drill taking place at the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex in Vung Tau City on Saturday morning.

Some 50 fire trucks and ambulances were also mobilized for the drill.

In the hypothetical situation, while the petrochemicals complex was importing naphtha, a flammable chemical, a pipe broke.

Meanwhile, a nearby facility was being welded. As a result, the chemical spilled out and a fire broke out, producing black smoke and hazardous gases.

The blaze injured three workers who were trapped in a chemical tank.

And yet, as smoke blanketed the site, a chemical tank truck collided with another vehicle, causing its driver and driving assistant to be stuck inside the cabin and chemicals to flow onto the ground.

Employees of Long Son Petrochemicals Co. Ltd., which operates the complex, were immediately mobilized to put out the fire.

The incident was reported to police and the Ba Ria – Vung Tau administration.

Being afraid of the spread of the fire, local authorities mobilized all firefighting vehicles in their precincts to the site and evacuated residents living near the company to safe places to avoid the poisonous gases.

The fire drill took place in a safe and effective manner as planned.

The Long Son Petrochemicals Complex whose investor is Thailand’s Siam Cement Group carries a price tag of some US$5 billion and is now some 98 percent complete.
