Two 11-year-old girls drowned while bathing in a stream in Phu Quoc City, a popular tourist destination off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, on Saturday.

The two were taken to Da Ban Stream in Cua Duong Commune in the island city by their parents, a representative of the People’s Committee of the commune said on Saturday afternoon.

The deadly incident happened at 3:45 pm on the same day, while their parents were enjoying food on a large rock, some 25 meters from the drowning site, according to the commune’s official.

After some tourists discovered the incident, they took the two girls to the shore, gave them first aid, and rushed them to the Phu Quoc City Healthcare Center for emergency treatment.

However, the two were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The two lived in Duong Dong Ward in Phu Quoc City, Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reported, citing a local.

Police are investigating the cause of the drowning.

Phu Quoc City has experienced downpours over the past few days, making many streams there, including Da Ban Spring, more attractive to locals and tourists.
