Hundreds of fish come to the surface of Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Trash and fish covered the surface of a Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal section in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City on Friday morning following a heavy rain on Thursday night.

The garbage and dead fish in the canal gave off an awful smell.

Many local residents voiced their concerns over the emergence of fish, mainly tilapia, and carp.

Schools of fish emerged along a section from the first to third bridges spanning the canal.

“The phenomenon often occurs after rains. During the rains, poisonous waste may flow from sewers from the canal, causing fish to find it hard to breathe,” a local resident said.

The volume of fish emerging to the canal surface is large.

The administration in Ho Chi Minh City launched the first phase of a project to clean the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal in 2012. However, a wastewater treatment plant in Thanh My Loi Ward, Thu Duc City, under Ho Chi Minh City has yet to be developed, so wastewater in the area flows to the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal, thus polluting the canal.
