The Nui Vung Tunnel, a vital component of the Cam Lam-Vinh Hao Expressway project in south-central Vietnam, has been successfully excavated after nearly 18 months of construction.

The Cam Lam-Vinh Hao Expressway Joint Stock Company and Deo Ca Group held a ceremony in Nhi Ha Commune, Thuan Nam District, Ninh Thuan Province on Monday to commemorate the successful excavation of the Nui Vung Tunnel.

The excavation teams from both the north and south directions of the left branch of the tunnel successfully dug through Vung Mountain with exceptional accuracy, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress.

The tunnel, stretching 2.2 kilometers in length and located within the Cam Lam-Vinh Hao Expressway project, is built in the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), an engineering technique that provides flexibility in construction across different geological conditions and guarantees improved safety compared to conventional tunneling modes.

According to Le Quyet Tien, director of the Transport Construction Investment Management Authority under the Ministry of Transport, upon completion, the tunnel project will establish a vital link between the expressways connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Khanh Hoa Province, alleviating traffic congestion on National Highway 1.

As a whole, the Cam Lam-Vinh Hao Expressway project will reduce travel time, catering to the requirements of travel, transportation, tourism, cultural and social exchanges, boosting regional economic development and tapping into the region’s tourism potential.

With a total investment of VND7.9 trillion (US$333.8 million), the expressway spans a total length of 78.5 kilometers, traversing Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan Provinces in south-central Vietnam.

It is among the three projects in Phase 1 of the North-South Expressway, utilizing the public-private partnership (PPP) method.

As per the outlined schedule, approximately 21 kilometers of the Cam Lam-Vinh Hao Expressway is set to be accessible by the end of December, while the entire route is anticipated to reach completion by April 30, 2024.
