A waste treatment plant in Bai Bon Hamlet under Phu Quoc City off Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam has seen its trial operation suspended as it failed to meet waste treatment requirements, causing environmental pollution.
The administration of Kien Giang Province had earlier allowed Global Renewable Energy JSC to conduct the waste treatment project, the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment said on Saturday.
However, the province first scrapped the project as it failed to operate at the committed capacity.
Local authorities later gave the green light for Minh Thuan Thanh Construction Investment Co. Ltd. to develop the project and operate it on a trial basis.
However, the plant failed to completely treat the waste discharged on Phu Quoc and caused an unpleasant odor during the waste treatment process, leading to environmental pollution and affecting the lives of residents in the neighborhood.
As a result, the province has suspended the trial operation of the plant.
The provincial People’s Committee and relevant agencies are seeking new investors with advanced technology to operate the plant, said Phung Quoc Binh, director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
The department has proposed the provincial People’s Committee use the province’s budget for the project, Binh added.
Phu Quoc City discharges some 180 metric tons of garbage per day, according to the local People’s Committee.
The waste treatment plant in Bai Bon Hamlet treated around 100 metric tons of trash per day during a trial run.
