A Hanoi Highway section stretching from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc Intersection, located in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Duc City, is likely to be renamed after late General Vo Nguyen Giap.
The municipal People’s Council, a legislative body, will consider and pass the municipal administration’s proposal on the renaming of the road at a meeting scheduled for Monday.
The Hanoi Highway is the main route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Thu Duc City and neighboring southern provinces such as Dong Nai and Binh Duong.
The road section in question is 7.79 kilometers long, according to the proposal.
The remaining section of the Hanoi Highway runs from Thu Duc Intersection to Bien Hoa City in Dong Nai Province.
The street renaming is aimed at recognizing and honoring the great contributions of late General Giap toward Vietnam’s liberation and unification, said the municipal Department of Culture and Sports.
The Thu Duc City administration collected feedback on the proposal from local people residing along the route and more than 90 percent of them endorsed the renaming.
The renaming will help form a line of three connected major roads, namely Hanoi Highway, Vo Nguyen Giap, and Dien Bien Phu, in association with General Giap and the historic Dien Bien Phu victory under his command in 1954.
Vo Nguyen Giap was born on August 25, 1911 in Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province, located in the central region of Vietnam.
He started his career as a history teacher before joining the army to become a legendary general who led the Vietnam Army to defeat French and U.S. invaders in 1954 and 1975, respectively.
He directly commanded major operations including the Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and Ho Chi Minh campaigns in 1975.
General Giap served as deputy prime minister and national defense minister since national reunification in 1975 till 1980.
In 1981-1991, he was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers.
The general is credited as one of the great men in the world in encyclopedias of many countries, including the U.S..
