The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a plan to spend over VND8.5 billion (US$359,635) hiring a unit to collect garbage from the Saigon River until the end of this year.
The People’s Committee will assign the job to the Department of Transport and relevant agencies.
Pursuant to the plan, the city will collect garbage and debris on the river every two days.
The Department of Transport had earlier proposed collecting garbage and debris along a 6.2-kilometer stretch of the river from an intersection with Te Canal to the Saigon Bridge, using six modern machines.
The city will also utilize buoys linked together by steel wires to prevent trash and water hyacinth from being stuck around bridge piers.
It expects to collect some 1,800 metric tons of garbage from the river until the end of this year.
The river section mentioned in the plan is a prime site, stretching from Binh Thanh District to District 4, according to the Department of Transport.
The section is surrounded by renowned landmarks, such as Nha Rong Harbor, Bach Dang Wharf, and Ba Son Bridge.
Therefore, the collection of garbage on the section will help revitalize the cityscape and contribute to the city’s tourism development.
The city has carried out a similar garbage collection plan on a 17-kilometer section from Vam Thuat River to Tham Luong Canal since 2021, with nearly 90 percent of the garbage on the route having been collected and treated.
The application of new technology to collecting garbage from rivers and canals has yielded positive results, according to the Department of Transport.
