South Koreans with an international driving permit will be allowed to drive in Vietnam starting on July 23.
The Korean National Police Agency was cited by the Vietnam News Agency as saying on Sunday that the bilateral pact between Vietnam and South Korea on the mutual recognition of international driving permits was signed during South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to Vietnam on June 23.
The accord will take effect on Sunday this week.
As per the pact, South Korean citizens holding a valid international driving permit are eligible to drive in Vietnam.
South Koreans with a driver’s license can apply for an international permit at police stations, driver examination centers, and license examination offices at Incheon Airport and Gimpo Airport. The permit is valid for a year.
The Korean agency expects over 4.3 million South Korean citizens eligible for international driving permits to drive in the Southeast Asian country.
The South Korean government had earlier granted permission for holders of international driving permits issued by Vietnam to drive in the Eastern Asian nation under Article 96 of the country’s Road Traffic Law.
South Korea is a signatory of the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (1946), which has been ratified by 101 countries.
The country also accepts international driving licenses issued by the signatories of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
Meanwhile, Vietnam accepts driving licenses from the 86 countries participating in the Vienna Convention.
