Many residential areas in Binh Duong Province, southern Vietnam suffered a massive power outage on Monday evening due to a partial grid failure induced by heavy rain.
A representative of Binh Duong Power Company told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on the same day that the power lines in Thu Dau Mot City were damaged by heavy rain.
The company asked its staff to promptly fix the system to restore power for residents in the province.
Rain started to fall at 7:05 pm on the same day, affecting the power system and knocking out power to many households in Hiep Thanh Ward in the city.
An unexpected power blackout turned their daily activities upside down, and slowed down traffic flows as street lights went dark.
Some residents called the customer service center and were told that several other areas were without power and electricity was not expected to return for many hours.
According to an announcement issued by the power company, power would be restored in Phu My, Hiep Thanh, and Phu Loi Wards in Thu Dau Mot City at 9:30 pm on Monday evening.
The Song Than 3 industrial park and the Phu My resettlement area in Phu Tan Ward were expected to regain electricity at 9:30 pm.
The grid failure also plunged part of the Nam Tan Uyen industrial park, parts of Tan Hiep Ward and Tan Phuoc Khanh Ward in Tan Uyen City into darkness until 9:00 pm.
Parts of Binh Chuan Ward in Thuan An City were experiencing a blackout last night.

In Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Binh Duong, Trang Dai Ward in Bien Hoa City suffered a power cut until 10:00 pm on Monday evening due to heavy rain.
In 2013, Binh Duong Province’s grid failure cut power to 18 provinces and cities in the southern region.
The massive blackout was attributed to an electrical discharge from a 500kV transmission line. The outage affected 7.7 million residents.
