The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has issued an urgent dispatch asking relevant departments and agencies to intensify efforts aimed at ensuring the safety of irrigation works and speeding up key flood control projects in order to fight natural disasters this year.
The municipal administration tasked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment with working with other relevant units to remove bottlenecks over land compensation and to accelerate work on natural disaster prevention and flood control projects.
The municipal People’s Committee also ordered the quick completion of embankment and irrigation projects to prevent landslides and erosion, as well as to guarantee the safety of residents.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Investment was assigned to review the progress of natural disaster prevention projects and report to the municipal administration on long-delayed or unnecessary projects to divert capital to more important works.
The Department of Construction is in charge of directing the Ho Chi Minh City Infrastructure Management Center to repair and renovate pumps, pumping stations, and tide-control gates citywide to ensure their effective operations.
The Department of Transport is responsible for supervising the process of an anti-landslide project on the Thanh Da Peninsula in Binh Thanh District, as well as the completion of Saigon River embankment upgrade projects at five sluice gates.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was tasked with promptly checking the quality of the bridge over the Tan Kien sluice in the outlying district of Binh Chanh, and upgrading it if necessary.
Furthermore, the People’s Committee assigned the Ho Chi Minh City Management Board for Investment and Construction of Traffic Projects to cooperate with other relevant units to expedite the work on key traffic infrastructure projects and bear responsibility for inundation caused by landslides and erosion.
The heads of Thu Duc City and other districts must be held accountable for delays to traffic projects due to subjective factors, said the city administration.
Besides, the People’s Committees of the districts and Thu Duc City were told to call on residents affected by the projects to quickly hand over their land and relocate.
