Authorities in Lam Dong Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region, on Friday morning continued the evacuation of local residents to safer places, as a heavy rain during the night before triggered flooding, flash floods, and landslides in Bao Loc City and Da Huoai District.

Lasting from 11:00 pm on Thursday till dawn on Friday, the downpour brought severe flooding to Dai Lao Commune and Loc Chau Commune in Bao Loc, affecting a dozen households in the area.

In Dai Lao, whose four villages were badly hit by flooding, local authorities dispatched rescue forces to promptly evacuate four households and their properties to safer locations.

Loc Chau encountered the same fate, with more than 40 rescuers making efforts to evacuate residents of over 30 households on Thursday night.

The torrential rain led to erosion and landslides on a bypass in Bao Loc, forcing authorities to block this route to avoid accidents.

As a result of the intense rainfall, the water level in Da Huoai River rose rapidly the same night, leading to flash floods and landslides in many parts of Da Huoai District and the evacuation of local inhabitants in Da M’ri Town.

Moreover, several communes in the district such as Phuoc Loc and Da Oai faced traffic disruptions, while tens of hectares of farming land was inundated.

The provincial weather center on Friday morning announced that local people should prepare for further flash floods and landslides caused by torrential rains.

Between 11:00 pm on Thursday and 6:00 am on Friday, heavy rains hit Bao Loc City and four districts in Lam Dong, with rainfall of 50-93mm, the center said.

Earlier, the provincial authorities on Wednesday evacuated residents from the Dong Thanh irrigation reservoir project in Lam Ha District, where huge earth cracks led to land subsidence in the nearby area and posed a threat to residential safety.

The cracks, measuring 5-10cm wide, appeared on an area of 2.5 hectares around the irrigation lake after a deluge occurred there for several days.
