New rounds of heavy rain are expected to pound northern Vietnam in the next few days, packing flash floods, landslides, and thunderstorms, due to an active low-pressure area in the region, said a national weather center official.

The northern region has experienced moderate to heavy rains on a wide scale over the past few days as a result of the low-pressure system, Vu Anh Tuan, deputy head of the Weather Forecasting Department, under the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, said on Friday afternoon.

The low-pressure area could intensify and remain active until Monday, he forecast.

From next Tuesday onwards, the low-pressure area is predicted to move west-ward, bringing medium to heavy rains to the region, especially in the northwestern and northern mountainous locations.

In addition, authorities and local people should prepare for possible flash floods, landslides, thunderstorms, and wind gusts, the weather official added.

According to the national weather center, northern Vietnam and the north-central province of Thanh Hoa are poised to see moderate to heavy downpours with rainfall ranging between 20 and 50 millimeters on Saturday.

Extremely heavy rains could lash the northeastern part of the region, where rainfall may exceed 120 millimeters.

Meanwhile, two north-central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh could experience showers and thunderstorms, with torrential rains forecast for some locations.

Tuan added that sunshine and rain are likely to alternate over the northern region throughout August, while the Central Highlands and southern regions may see afternoon and night thunderstorms.
