Truong Hong Ky, a military official in Phu Yen Province, central Vietnam drowned on Friday afternoon after he managed to rescue two teenagers swept away by sea waves, a local military official confirmed the same day.
Major Ky, 42, deputy commander of the Military Command of Song Cau Town under Phu Yen, detected two teenagers being swept out to sea at a local beach during his patrol over the area at around 4:30 pm the same day, Colonel Luong Ke Diem, chief commander at the provincial Military Command, said.
Immediately, Ky swam out to save Nguyen Pham Ngoc Tam, 16, residing in Song Cau, and took Tam to the shore.
Ky continued to swim out to rescue Tran Pham Minh Thien, 15, another Song Cau inhabitant.
After taking the second ashore, Ky was pulled out by a strong current and failed to swim back to the shore as he was exhausted.
Some local residents discovered Ky and took him to the shore to give him first aid before rushing him to a nearby medical center, but he died later.
According to the Song Cau Military Command, Major Ky already got married and has two little kids. Today would be his 42nd birthday.
In recognition for his bravery while on duty, the Ministry of National Defense has decided to posthumously promote Major Truong Hong Ky to a higher ranking, with effect from this Friday, Colonel Diem said on Saturday.
