A Vietnam Airlines (VNA) plane carrying 94 passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to Japan safely landed at Narita Airport with a cracked cockpit window on Tuesday, and the aircraft returned home two days later after a windshield replacement.
The Boeing 787 aircraft was flying at an altitude of 12,300 meters, about 50 kilometers east of the island of Tokunoshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, at around Tuesday noon when the left front cockpit window glass cracked, Japan's Mainichi newspaper reported on Thursday.
The plane continued its flight and safely touched down on runway A of Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture at 1:31 pm the same day, according to the Narita Airport Office under the Japanese transport ministry.
All of the plane’s 94 passengers and crew were safe.
Upon landing, the runway underwent a three-minute closure for safety checks, during which no anomalies were detected.
The scheduled return flight of the aircraft, from Narita to Ho Chi Minh, was canceled following the incident.
While the incident was not deemed serious, the damaged cockpit window was nonetheless replaced in Japan, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper, citing VNA.
Subsequently, the aircraft returned to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on Thursday.
The carrier confirmed the incident, saying that the preliminary cause was strong winds that cracked part of the surface of the cockpit window glass.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam classified the incident as 'Level D,' indicating a low-risk level, as reported by VNA.
Aircraft window glass is multilayered and made of light, super hard, and tempered materials.
