A man backed his car out of a tollgate and drove it in the wrong direction on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway in southern Vietnam on Monday as he did not have sufficient money to pay a toll fee.

A traffic police officer said on Tuesday that the man was summoned and booked for wrong-way driving on the same day.

Camera footage showed that the car was driving from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai Province on Monday afternoon.

However, the car failed to pass through tollgate 319 to reach Nhon Trach District in the southern province as the driver’s toll payment account did not have enough money to cover a toll fee.

The driver was identified as N.Q.T., 39, who resides in southern Binh Duong Province.

As per prevailing traffic regulations, he will be fined VND4-6 million (US$162.4-243.6) and have his driver’s license revoked for one to three months.
