The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has proposed developing six more parks to increase green space in the city.
They comprise the 485-hectare Sai Gon Safari Park project in Cu Chi District, a 128-hectare eco-park in Thu Duc City, a 20-hectare park in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in Thu Duc City, the 13-hectare Go Cat Park project in Binh Tan District, a 3.8-hectare park in Binh Thanh District’s Ward 12, and the 150-hectare Thanh Xuan Park project in District 12, according to the Department of Construction’s report sent to the municipal government.
The department added that a hindrance to the city’s public park development plan is the shortage of capital.
The city expected the area dedicated to parks to increase by 150 hectares (or 0.65 square meters per person) by 2025, and 450 hectares (or one square meter per person) by 2030.
It needs to conduct a minimum of 54 projects with an estimated investment of over VND9 trillion (US$364.5 million) to reach the target.
However, only eight projects have been put up for seeking approval.
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council has green-lit four of them with a combined price tag of VND1.59 trillion ($64.4 million).
They include a project to develop infrastructure, a school and a park in the current Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery in Binh Tan District, the Thanh Loc Park project and the Tan Chanh Hiep Park project in District 12, and the Tan Thanh Tay Park project in Cu Chi District.
The department reported that it’s hard to call on private investors to get involved in public park projects as such projects are not eligible for the public-private partnership model.
The management and exploitation of public parks, such as vehicle parking services, canteens, and vending machines, shows many shortcomings and bottlenecks.
