Local authorities and residents of Binh Dinh Province in south-central Vietnam have managed to rescue a whale that was found washed up on Quy Nhon beach on Thursday morning, a local police official confirmed the same day.
The whale was spotted by local inhabitants at around 5:00 am, said Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hoang Tuan, head of the fire and rescue division under the Binh Dinh Department of Public Security.
The mammal, measuring some 2.5 meters in length and around 200-250 kilograms in weight, had multiple injuries on its body.
After receiving basic treatment on site from rescue forces, the whale was brought back to the sea by the forces and local residents, Tuan said.
The Binh Dinh Fisheries Department described the animal as a small sperm whale, scientifically known as Kogia Breviceps, saying it was possibly caught in a net, got injured and washed ashore.
