Authorities and residents in a town in Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam saved six disabled students from drowning at a local beach on Sunday, a local official said on Monday.
At 2:30 pm on Sunday, six students from a school for disabled children in Quy Nhon City, Binh Binh Province were swimming at Trung Luong Beach in Cat Tien Town, Phu Cat District, also under the province, when big waves swept them offshore, said Nguyen Van Hung, chairman of the People’s Committee of Phu Cat.
Fishermen who witnessed the incident called other locals, border guards, and policemen for help.
The students visited the beach themselves and were not accompanied by their family members or teachers, Hung added.
After receiving first aid, two of the students were rushed to the Cat Tien Town Medical Center, while another with more severe injuries was taken to the Binh Dinh General Hospital for further treatment, the official said.
The student hospitalized at Binh Dinh General Hospital is now in stable condition, said Dr. Vo Thanh Nam Binh, deputy director of the hospital.
According to Phu Cat District chairman Hung, there have been big waves and strong winds at Trung Luong Beach recently.
Local authorities advised residents and tourists against swimming at the beach.
