Mountains of household trash have piled up around Tan Cang Station in Binh Thanh District, the largest elevated station of Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line, over the past few days.

Dozens of garbage bags were stacked near the stairway leading to the elevated station on Thursday, and several plastic bottles, foam boxes, and wood scraps were strewn around the station.

Q.A., 46, said that the origin of the garbage bags was unknown, but they had been sitting there for weeks.

“The waste-filled station is a serious eyesore. Such a messy sight should not be found at a metro station of the metro line, which is considered a symbol of the city’s modernity and progress,” A. said.

Though Tan Cang Station has trash bins, garbage is still scattered around.

According to metro rider N.M.T., 21, the massive amount of trash at the station tarnishes the city’s image.

The surrounding area of Tan Cang Station had previously faced encroachment by street vendors and illegally parked vehicles.

The municipal Department of Transport urged the People’s Committee of Binh Thanh District to quickly address the issue.

The first metro line, which stretches from Ben Thanh Station in District 1 to Suoi Tien Coach Station in Thu Duc City, a district-level unit of Ho Chi Minh City, began its official service on December 22 and operates up to 200 daily train trips.

Every trip takes nearly 30 minutes, plus the stop time at each station of about 30 seconds.

The interval between two trips is from eight to 12 minutes.

Trains run at 110 kilometers per hour above the ground and 80 kilometers per hour underground.
