Doctors at E Hospital in Hanoi said on Monday that they had saved a woman run over by a 1.5-metric-ton truck.
The woman was hospitalized in critical conditions with multiple severe injuries.
Doctors found that the woman suffered various bone fractures, including an unstable pelvic fracture, an extraperitoneal bladder perforation, a fractured left leg bone, and a sprained right foot.
Following a consultation, doctors decided to perform a surgical operation on the woman.
Doctor Nguyen Dinh Lien, head of the nephrology, urology, and andrology department at E Hospital, said it was a severe case with a poor prognosis and a high risk of mortality.
The patient weighs only 35 kilograms, which presented the most difficulty of the surgery.
Meanwhile, she sustained many dangerous injuries and lost a lot of blood, which forced surgeons to use about three liters of blood to stabilize the patient.
They performed a laparoscopic surgery to suture her bladder perforation, clean the abdomen, and temporarily rearrange the broken bones.
This was a complicated surgery. As the patient is female and unmarried, doctors tried to ensure her fertility, Lien noted.
After a week, the patient underwent another surgery to have her broken pelvis and leg bones treated.
According to Bui Ngoc Hoang, one of the doctors directly involved in the surgery, an unstable pelvic fracture poses a high risk of fatality.
Doctors weighed surgical solutions to help the woman recover her mobility and fertility soon.
The six-hour surgery was a success.
The woman is recovering well and undergoing physical therapy.
