The Mekong Delta region of Vietnam is forecast to see saline intrusion weaken in May while temperatures start dropping and more rains are coming, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Saltwater in the Vam Co, Cai Lon and Cai Be Rivers will be less dense in mid-May.

Many parts of the delta might experience medium to heavy rains this month, according to the national weather center.

From May 15 onward, extreme heat is likely to end, while saltwater intrusion will fall significantly by May 20.

Currently, the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay Rivers are suffering the most severe saline intrusion, which encroaches 90 - 125 kilometers from their estuaries.

The saltwater intrusion in the Cua Tieu, Cua Dai, Co Chien, Hau and Cai Lon Rivers reaches up to 50 kilometers.

Tien Giang and Long An Provinces are among the worst saline intrusion-hit localities in the delta this year, according to the southern weather center.
