Since 2021, Ho Chi Minh City has developed only 30 hectares of public parks, well below the target of 150 hectares set for 2025, so the city needs to execute 55 projects to improve green spaces and build public parks at a total cost of VND4.48 trillion (US$175 million).

The information is included in a report recently issued by the municipal Department of Construction on the city’s public green space development program and flood control and wastewater treatment projects for the 2020-25 period.

The city aims to have at least 0.65 square meters of green space per resident, at least 150 hectares of new public parks, and 10 hectares of public green space, as well as planting 30,000 trees by 2025.

However, until now, the city has offered some 0.57 square meters of green space per citizen, and planted and renovated 28,014 public trees, meeting 93 percent of the target.

The municipal department assessed that the city’s green park development program failed to reach the expected progress.

To fulfill the target, the city is set to implement 55 projects during the 2020-25 period, but only nine projects covering 36 hectares have been included in its medium-term investment plan.

The department proposed the municipal People’s Committee scale down its target to no lower than 0.61 square meters of green space per citizen by 2025 if it cannot allocate the capital for these projects.
