The number of Chinese visitors to Vietnam reached 357,000 in May, exceeding the count of South Korean visitors at 351,000, according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.
However, for the January-May period, South Korea remained Vietnam’s largest source of tourists, with over 1.9 million visits, constituting 25.7 percent of the total.
China ranks second, with 1.6 million visits, comprising 21.2 percent.
Taiwan follows in third place with 529,000 visitors, while the U.S. and Japan rank fourth and fifth with 350,000 and 289,000 visitors, respectively.
Other notable markets within Vietnam’s top 10 include Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, and India.
In May, Vietnam welcomed nearly 1.4 million international visitors, marking a remarkable increase of over 50 percent compared to the same period last year.
This figure brings the total number of international visitors to 7.6 million year-to-date, representing a 65 percent surge over the corresponding period last year and a nearly four percent rise over the same period in 2019, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Revenue from accommodation and food services in the past five months is estimated at VND296.3 trillion (US$11.6 billion), reflecting a 15-percent increase over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, travel revenue is estimated at VND24.2 trillion ($950.88 million), demonstrating a robust 45-percent growth.
Several localities, including Da Nang City, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Quang Ninh Province, have experienced significant increases in travel revenue compared to the same period last year.
Air travel remains the primary mode of arrival for international visitors to Vietnam, accounting for nearly 1.2 million arrivals in May, followed by land and sea travel.
