Authorities in Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam will tap VND88.5 billion (US$3.5 million) from its budget for a project to address environmental pollution at a local dumping ground before shutting down the site.

At its recent meeting, the provincial People’s Council passed a resolution to implement the project at the Binh Tu dumping ground, located in Tien Thanh Commune under the provincial capital city of Phan Thiet.

This project is aimed at reducing pollution caused by the dumpsite, protecting the health of local inhabitants and promoting local socio-economic growth.

As per the project, the closure of the dumping ground will come after the existing volume of garbage at the site is completely treated.

A landfill spanning some 6.2 hectares will be built at the site as the main part of the project.

Binh Thuan will develop other auxiliary works such as a wastewater treatment facility, an exhaust gas treatment system, internal roads, a water supply and power system, a garden, and several others.

The Binh Tu dumpsite commenced operations in 1999, mainly receiving and treating garbage discharged by Phan Thiet and neighboring areas.

As this open dumping ground has been overwhelmed by an excessive amount of trash, the main waste treatment methods include leveling garbage hills, spraying chemicals, and using odor and fly control products.

But these methods have failed to meet requirements for a sanitary landfill, thereby causing severe pollution in the neighborhood.

Prior to the meeting, the provincial People’s Council asked the People’s Committee to work with Nhat Hoang Company, the developer of the Binh Tu dumping ground and another facility in the province’s Ham Thuan Nam District, to decide on the time of the closure and post-closure waste treatment methods.

If the company fails to fulfill its commitment for proper waste treatment by mid-2025, the provincial People’s Committee will order the developer to coordinate with relevant agencies to find other effective measures.
