The Vietnam Navy Region 3 Command reported on Saturday morning that the Chinese Navy had handed over two Vietnamese fishermen to the unit after their boat sank off Tri Ton Island in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago.
Ship 952 under the Vietnam Navy Region 3 Command received the two Vietnamese fishermen in distress - Pham Tan Thanh, 59, and Nguyen Kinh, 52, both from Nha Trang City in Khanh Hoa Province - from the Chinese Navy’s Coast Guard Ship 4110.
Both fishermen are currently in stable condition and good health.
Ship 952 is expected to return the two rescued fishermen to Da Nang City port in central Vietnam on Sunday morning.
On August 14, Thanh and Kinh departed on a fishing boat numbered KH 93159 TS.
They had not reported their departure and were en route to a South Korean cargo ship for repair work, but they could not recall the vessel’s name or location.
Due to bad weather, their fishing boat sank 68 nautical miles south of Tri Ton Island, belonging to the Paracel archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea, at 8:00 am on August 18.
The fishermen managed to escape on a small boat.
Upon sighting Tri Ton Island, they rowed toward it and reached the beach by noon on August 22.
The Chinese Coast Guard later transferred them to Vietnamese authorities.
