The administration of Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam on Tuesday issued a directive calling for intensified disease prevention measures and a province-wide vaccination campaign for domestic animals, in response to two human deaths from rabies and outbreaks of African swine fever. 

Since the beginning of 2025, the province has recorded two outbreaks of African swine fever and six cases of rabies, including the two fatal cases in Long Thanh District.

To contain the spread of rabies, the provincial administration announced a mass vaccination campaign for dogs and cats from March 30 to April 24, funded through private sector sources.

Local authorities have been tasked with implementing the campaign effectively by allocating sufficient resources and raising public awareness about infectious animal diseases. 

Animal owners were encouraged to ensure their animals are fully vaccinated to create herd immunity and prevent potential economic losses.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment will closely monitor livestock disease trends, particularly in high-risk or previously affected areas, to quickly detect and contain any new outbreaks.

Officials will also launch the first round of 2025 livestock vaccinations in tandem with the rabies campaign, and inspection teams will be formed to oversee disease control efforts and vaccination quality across localities.

The provincial Department of Health will coordinate with veterinary services to track rabies vaccine recipients and jointly investigate suspected cases, ensuring timely and effective public health responses.
