A video has gone viral on Vietnamese social media, showing three foreign tourists taking a stroll down a street in Hanoi in scanty bikinis, which caused a public backlash.
In the video, the three foreign women donning the two-piece swimsuit happily chatted with each other while walking along Dao Duy Tu Street, located in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, as if they were on a beach, reported the local media.
Reacting against the underdressed foreigners, many social media users called for harsh sanctions against these tourists, proposing local authorities ban the wearing of swimsuits outside bathing areas.
Many left comments on Facebook that if it is extremely hot, people can wear a T-shirt, and shorts rather than bikinis to show off their bodies.
Walking along a street in bikinis is unacceptable and is offensive to Vietnamese culture.
An official of the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee told Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), the national radio station, that the district was notified of the incident, but it was hard to impose a fine on these tourists.
Hanoi has yet to introduce any penalty for such offensive behaviors in public places, so the district would only ask these foreign tourists not to repeat their bad behavior, as well as require visitors not to wear inappropriate attire on streets, the official explained.
