A heavy rainstorm lashed Hanoi from Sunday night to the early hours of Monday, resulting in severe flooding and traffic congestion across the streets citywide, and making life miserable for commuters on the first working day of the week.
Around 7:00 am, long traffic delays were reported on many streets such as Thai Ha, Nguyen Trai, Luong The Vinh, To Huu, Khuat Duy Tien, and Nguyen Tuan since vehicles struggled to wade through these severely flooded routes, although the rain had already stopped.
The midnight downpour also flooded many homes, forcing residents to wake up early to drain water from their houses.
The capital city received an overnight estimated rainfall of 100-150mm.
The outlying district of Dong Anh possibly got the highest amount of rain at 234mm, while Thanh Xuan District recorded 150mm of precipitation and Thanh Tri District saw 114mm of rainfall.
Other districts impacted by more than 100mm of rain are Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Hai Ba Trung, Nam Tu Liem, and Ha Dong.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that it could take 8-10 more days for floodwaters in areas near the Bui River in the outlying district of Chuong My to recede, while flooding in the Tich River may last 5-7 days.
