Police in Dak Lak Province, located in Vietnam's Central Highlands region, reported on Monday that they had detained a 32-year-old man for reversing his pickup truck in a schoolyard and hitting a seven-year-old student to death.
At 6:45 am on Monday, L.V.N., a resident of Krong Buk District in Dak Lak, drove his pickup truck to Bui Thi Xuan Elementary and Middle School.
Due to the rain, N. entered the schoolyard to drop off his child.
After his child exited the vehicle, he reversed to leave and hit H., a second-grade student who was standing behind the car. H. died instantly from the collision.
Nguyen Dinh Kha, head of the education and training division in Krong Buk, said they had received a report of the incident from Bui Thi Xuan Elementary and Middle School.
The division and local authorities have tasked the school with supporting the victim’s family in holding a funeral due to the family's extremely difficult circumstance.
All 12 members of the family have to share a small house.

Kha added that police would probe into N.'s responsibility, the school's principal, and the security guard on duty at the time of the incident.
He confirmed that all schools in Krong Buk forbid parents from driving cars and motorbikes into schoolyards.
He is attributing the incident to the parent’s poor awareness.
The school reported that when N. was driving the pickup truck into the schoolyard, the security guard was not at the gate.
Many readers of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper have expressed their sympathy for the victim and vented their anger on the pickup truck driver.
