As of Monday, 20 countries and international organizations have pledged or are expected to provide a total of US$22 million in emergency relief to support Vietnam’s recovery efforts in the wake of typhoon Yagi.
They are providing Vietnam with cash assistance and a large volume of supplies including shelter, clean water, sanitation, and other essential items, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Friday last week, Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairwoman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, handed over more than VND600 million ($24,400) to Do Van Chien, chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, as contributions from Vietnamese communities in Laos, Japan, and Russia to support typhoon-hit people in Vietnam.
Besides, overseas Vietnamese communities teamed up in fundraising efforts to support affected residents in recovering from the typhoon damage and quickly getting back to their normal lives, with donations reaching VND19 billion ($774,000), and counting.
In support of Vietnam’s response to the devastating impacts of Yagi, world leaders have sent letters, telegrams, and messages of condolence to Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.
Many countries and international organizations also provided timely financial aid, equipment, essential supplies, and experts.
Cambodia's Acting Head of State Hun Sen, Prime Minister Hun Manet, and National Assembly President Khuon Sudary expressed their deep condolences to the Vietnamese state and people, especially to the families of typhoon-stricken victims.
Cambodia voiced its confidence that Vietnam would soon overcome this difficult time.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences and affirmed India’s solidarity with the people of Vietnam, emphasizing New Delhi’s readiness to assist Vietnam in coping with the typhoon aftermath and returning to normal life.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated that his country stands ready to support Vietnam’s typhoon relief efforts.
Pope Francis, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko, and President of Seychelles Wavel Ramkalawan also sent letters and telegrams of condolence to Vietnam over the extensive damage induced by Yagi.
The foreign ministers of Cambodia, the U.S., New Zealand, Egypt, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechia, and Seychelles sent telegrams of sympathy to Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.
The foreign ministries and embassies of various countries also extended their condolences to Vietnam through their websites and social media platforms.
