Groundbreaking for a 175.5-kilometer expressway connecting southern Vietnam to the Cambodian border, with a projected cost of VND80.836 trillion ($3.2 billion), is set for 2026.
The My Thuan project management board has completed a pre-feasibility report for the Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu Expressway, which was envisaged to start at the Ha Tien Border Gate in Kien Giang Province and end at an intersection with National Highway 1 in Bac Lieu Province.
The board has submitted the pre-feasibility report to the Ministry of Transport.
Work on the project, which will pass through the four Mekong Delta provinces of Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu, is expected to begin in 2026 and finish in 2030.
The expressway will have six lanes, including two emergency stopping lanes, and a maximum speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour.
The project is expected to be funded by the state budget.
Investment in the Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu Expressway is significant to the development of the planned expressway system.
The expressway is intended to become an important route for transporting cargo from Cambodia to Vietnam's Mekong Delta region, boosting the region’s socio-economic development, national defense, and security.
In the Mekong Delta, the 45-kilometer Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway, the 51.5-kilometer Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway, and the 30-kilometer My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway are already in operation.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway, with a length of 109.5 kilometers, is under construction and expected to be opened to traffic at the end of next year.
The 80-kilometer Cao Lanh - Lo Te - Rach Soi road, which is already complete and in operation, was originally planned to be an expressway.
As for the horizontal expressway network, the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project is under construction.
The Ministry of Transport is also coordinating with the state appraisal council to complete pre-feasibility reports for the Hong Ngu - Tra Vinh and Ha Tien - Bac Lieu expressway projects.
