The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) on Saturday issued a dispatch ordering the suspension of operations at four airports, including Da Nang, Phu Bai, Dong Hoi, and Chu Lai, in the central region in response to the impact from powerful storm Trami.
The authority quoted weather forecasts as saying that Trami, the sixth storm to strike the East Vietnam Sea this year, poses a potential threat to the safe operation of several airports in central Vietnam.
As a result, Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh Province suspends services from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm on Sunday.
Phu Bai International Airport in Thua Thien-Hue Province halts operations between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm on Sunday.
Da Nang International Airport in the namesake city closes from 6:00 am on Sunday to 4:00 am on Monday.
Meanwhile, services at Chu Lai Airport in Quang Nam Province are suspended between 10:00 am on Sunday and 10:00 am on Monday.
The CAAV also asked the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation to provide appropriate aviation notifications in accordance with prevailing regulations and ensure absolutely safe flight operations.
Airport authorities in the northern and central regions have been assigned to oversee all aviation operations to ensure airport safety.
The CAAV also requested that relevant units report any issues that arise during the airport suspensions for timely adjustments.
Powerful storm Trami was spotted some 125 kilometers east-northeast of Da Nang City at 4:00 am on Sunday, with strong winds reaching up to 102 kilometers per hour.
The storm is expected to make landfall in the central provinces from Quang Tri to Quang Nam on Sunday afternoon, with winds reaching levels eight to nine and gusts up to level 11, bringing heavy rainfall.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the storm will likely weaken into a tropical depression before reversing direction and moving back out to sea.
