Trami, the sixth tropical storm to hit the East Vietnam Sea this year, will likely hit central Vietnam at 10:00 am on Sunday before changing its direction to go back to sea, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

As of 7:00 am on Sunday, storm Trami was located about 95km east-northeast of Da Nang City, with winds of up to 88kph and gusts reaching 117kph, much weaker than it was last night.

The storm was moving west-northeast at a speed of about 15kph.

Trami is forecast to make landfall in the central coastal region from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai at about 10:00 am on Sunday.

The storm will then change its direction to southeast to go back to sea at 10-15kph, with weaker winds of up to 88kph, and gradually downgrade into a tropical depression.

As of 4:00 am on Tuesday, Trami will reach the waters of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago and continue weakening into a low-pressure system.

Due to the storm, the waters in the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea have become rough, with waves reaching up to four meters and strong winds of up to 74 kph, accompanied by gusts as high as 102 kph, since early Sunday morning.

From Sunday morning, the waters off the central coast, from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai Provinces, will experience strong winds ranging from 49 kph to 133 kph and rough sea waves reaching up to five meters.

The coastal area between these provinces has been struck by powerful winds of up to 88kph and squalls of 117kph.

The stormy weather poses significant danger to vessels at sea, the center warned.

The agency also drew more attention to the protection of sea dykes and embankments from possible damage due to the powerful sea waves.

From early Sunday morning until Monday, the central region from Quang Binh to Quang Nam will have torrential rains with precipitation of up to 600mm in some areas.

Particularly, rains may last for three hours in certain places with rainfall of over 100mm, the center said.

The area from Ha Tinh Province to the northern part of the Central Highlands will also have downpours with rainfall of up to over 250mm.

The National Civil Defense Steering Committee on Friday reported that 285,000 soldiers and more than 12,500 facilities, including 13 aircraft, have been on standby to brace for the powerful storm.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued a telegram asking ministries and authorities in a series of central provinces to make urgent preparations to respond to the coming storm.
