Border guards in Quang Binh Province, north-central Vietnam took turns carrying an octogenarian patient two kilometers on their backs through the flooded areas of Le Thuy District at night to transport him to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Major Vo Doan Dung, deputy head of the Ngu Thuy Border Guard Station in Quang Binh, confirmed on Thursday morning that his unit assisted in transferring an 81-year-old patient, Do Trong Luc, from Le Thuy District General Hospital for emergency treatment at a higher-level institution.
At 8:30 pm on Wednesday, the station received a request for patient transport support from the aforementioned hospital, as the roads around it were flooded.
The team used a speedboat to approach the hospital, but as floodwaters receded quickly, they had to stop at a distance from where the ambulance was parked on National Highway 1.
The officers then took turns carrying the patient approximately two kilometers on foot to reach the ambulance.
Luc was then taken to the Vietnam–Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital in the same province for treatment.
By Thursday morning, floodwaters had mostly receded from residential areas in Le Thuy, leaving only a few spots still slightly submerged and allowing many roads to reopen.
