Da Nang City is considering adding commercial services to public toilet facilities along tourist routes to increase their appeal.
The proposal was discussed during a Friday meeting between the municipal People’s Council and local voters.
The voters said that maintaining clean public toilets significantly enhances the tourist experience in a tourism hub like Da Nang.
Luu Thi Ngoc Lan, a voter from An Hai Bac Ward in Son Tra District, aired concerns about the hygiene of many public toilets in the coastal city in central Vietnam.
It is necessary to invest more in these facilities, particularly those in high-traffic tourist areas and popular coastal routes like Bach Dang and Tran Phu Streets, Lan said.
Addressing these concerns, Pham Nam Son, director of the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment, underlined the city's focus on investing in public toilets.
“We have currently assigned 47 public toilets to five districts and the management boards of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang’s tourist beaches for management and operation,” Son noted.
He added that while they currently run these public toilets for their basic purpose, local authorities are exploring the possibility of adding commercial services to these venues.
Son identified locations like the public toilet at the corner of Hung Vuong and Yen Bai Streets in Hai Chau District as having the potential for such additions.
According to national radio station Voice of Vietnam, Da Nang’s accommodation establishments hosted approximately 8.67 million visitors in January-September.
This marks a 33-percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, exceeding the target by three percent.
Of these visitors, more than 3.17 million were international travelers, a 30-percent hike from 2023, while domestic visitors topped 5.49 million, marking a 34-percent rise from the previous year.
As of October, Da Nang is serviced by 22 flight routes, including six domestic and 16 international connections.
