The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has sent the municipal People’s Committee a fare proposal for the city’s first metro line, with ticket prices ranging from VND6,000 (US$0.2) to VND20,000 ($0.8) per trip.
As per the proposal, the fares will be VND7,000-20,000 ($0.27-0.8) per single trip for passengers with cash payments, depending on the distance.
Passengers making non-cash payments will pay VND6,000-19,000 ($0.2-0.75) per single ride.
The fare is proposed at VND40,000 ($1.57) per day, with no limits on rides, and VND90,000 ($3.5) per three-day pass.
Meanwhile, passengers can buy monthly tickets for VND300,000 ($11.8) each, while students may get a discount of 50 percent on monthly tickets.
The proposal recommends free rides for people with disabilities, children under six, senior citizens, and individuals recognized for meritorious service.
Passengers who take buses connecting to the first metro line or use the metro within its first month of operation would also receive free admission.
According to the municipal department, the fare plan for the first metro line is based on cost analysis, fares from the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line (Hanoi’s first metro), and studies on residents' ability to afford the service.
Metro line No. 1 will be subsidized to encourage residents to use the new means of transport and to increase its competitiveness.
The first metro line is 19.7 kilometers long, including 2.6 kilometers of underground urban rail link and 17.1 kilometers of elevated track, carrying a price tag of VND43.7 trillion ($1.7 billion).
It runs from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien Theme Park in Thu Duc City – a district-level administrative unit of Ho Chi Minh City – through three underground stations and 11 stops above the ground.
The line has a total of 17 trains, each capable of accommodating 930 passengers, including 147 sitting and 783 standing.
The metro line project got off the ground in 2012 and is set to start commercial operations in late 2024.
