Virginia Mary Lockett, an American physical therapist, was awarded the Vietnam Friendship Medal at the 70th anniversary celebration of Vietnamese Doctor's Day, held in Da Nang City, central Vietnam on Tuesday.
At the ceremony, organized by the municipal People's Committee, Nguyen Van Quang, secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee, presented the Friendship Medal to Lockett on behalf of the Vietnamese president.
The medal recognizes her exceptional contributions to Vietnam’s healthcare, particularly her work as a volunteer and expert in physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Lockett’s journey to Vietnam began in 2007 when she made the life-changing decision to leave her comfortable life in the United States to dedicate herself to traditional medicine and rehabilitation work in Vietnam.
She has been deeply involved with Da Nang Traditional Medicine Hospital, where she directly instructs patients recovering from paralysis, strokes, and severe injuries.
Her approach not only focuses on physical rehabilitation, but also provides emotional support, encouraging patients to believe that with the right methods and family support, they can make a full recovery.
Notably, she sold all her assets in the United States to fund her charity work.
Lockett has continually learned new methods to apply them effectively to her work, assisting hundreds of patients over the years.
