A new wave of cold air is moving toward Vietnam and will likely bring prolonged rain and chilly temperatures across the northern and central regions, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on Tuesday.
The cold air mass may initially affect the northeastern mountainous areas from Tuesday night.
From Wednesday night to Thursday, the cold air will possibly intensify, spreading across the entire northern and north-central regions, and later reaching parts of central Vietnam.
Northeastern winds will develop, reaching 12-28kph inland, 20-38kph in coastal areas, with gusts up to 49kph.
The national weather agency predicted that temperatures will gradually drop across northern Vietnam starting Wednesday.
Cold conditions are expected in the northern and north-central regions from Wednesday night, with severe cold and frost anticipated in mountainous areas.
Lows in the north will range from 12 to 15 degrees Celsius, dipping below eight degrees Celsius in high-altitude areas, while the north-central part will see lows of 14-17 degrees Celsius.
From Thursday night, cold weather will extend southward to the central region from Quang Binh Province to Hue City, with lows of 17-20 degrees Celsius.
Hanoi will also experience cold temperatures from early Thursday morning, with lows of 13-15 degrees Celsius.
The cold front, combined with upper-level westerly winds, could bring rain and drizzle to the northern and north-central regions from Wednesday to Saturday.
From March 8 to 13, as the cold front weakens, drizzles, fog, and persistent humidity will likely return, particularly in Hanoi and northeastern Vietnam.
The recent weakening of cold air and reduced rainfall led to increased humidity in Hanoi and other northern provinces, excluding some northwestern areas, causing dampness in homes, mold growth, and slow drying of clothes.
The incoming cold front is expected to reduce humidity temporarily, but it may return after March 8 as the cold air weakens.
The weather center added that the frequency of cold air masses in March is expected to be higher than in previous years.
Severe cold and frost are also possible in the first half of this month, mainly in the northern mountainous regions.
