Now, as the tournament has moved past the group stage and the Round of 16, Tuoi Tre News is making its own roster of the top memes to hit the Southeast Asian country.

World’s football stars driving each other home

Fans worldwide have been shocked at the unpredictability of this year’s World Cup. 

But for the international football stars who have been eliminated surprisingly from the competition, their 2018 World Cup legacy lives on…in the form of memes.

“Driving each other home” was a hit meme theme in Vietnam after Germany, Argentina, Spain, and Portugal were knocked out of the Cup.

A meme featuring Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo driving Germany’s Mesus Ozil and Argentina’s Lionel Messi on a motorbike through a Vietnamese city went viral on Facebook before Sunday night’s match between Spain and Russia.

Captioned “You guys sit still, tonight we’ll pick up Ramos,” the meme was meant to forecast that Spanish captain Sergio Ramos and La Roja would be eliminated from the tournament.

Of course, the Internet was quick to cash in on the accurate prediction by immediately positing follow-up memes with Ramos on the back of the bike.

The meme only began to lose steam after Brazil’s Neymar Jr. was prematurely added to the motorbike before his team’s 2-0 victory against Mexico on Monday night.

It seems fans have to wait until after Brazil’s quarterfinal match against Belgium to see if he ends up going along for the ride.
