Vietnam were off to a good start in their campaign to win their second AFF Championship title in ten year, as they easily trounced Laos 3-0 in their Group A opener in Vientiane on Thursday.

The Vietnamese dominated the whole game, with star striker Cong Phuong taking the lead in the 11th minute.

The hosts maintained their defensive tactic and managed to neutralize several attacks by the Vietnamese, until the second minute of extra time, when Vietnam's veteran Anh Duc converted on the rebound.

The hosts continued to show absolute dominance in the second half.

Quang Hai settled the game in the 68th minute with a freekick where he bent the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner.

Vietnam now top Group A with three points. The Golden Stars will play a home game against Malaysia, who beat Cambodia 1-0 on the other Group A opener, in Hanoi on November 16.

Vietnam won the AFF Championship, contested by ten nations affiliated to the ASEAN Football Federation, in 2008 and are hoping to claim the second title after ten years.

At the 2018 AFF Championship, Vietnam are in Group A with Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
