Vietnam left the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan after losing 1-3 to Iran in their last group-stage game on Tuesday afternoon.
Before the game, Vietnam were leading Group B with six points after two wins, needing only a draw to secure a place in the quarterfinals while Iran had no choice but to win.
Iran showed their determination by pushing forward and creating many chances right from the start.
In the 36th minute, Mohammad Hazbavi opened the scoring for Iran with a header following a free kick.
Vietnam made two substitutions, Nguyen Quoc Viet and Nguyen Van Truong, and started putting pressure in the second half.
In the 56th minute, Khuat Van Khang caught a key pass from Nguyen Hong Phuc and made a decisive finish, leveling the score for Vietnam.
After conceding, Iran substituted some speed players and that turned out to be effective choices.
From a breakthrough on the left flank in the 75th minute, the ball fell into Vietnam’s penalty area and Saeid Saharkhizan finished to increase the lead to 2-1 for Iran.
In the remaining minutes, Vietnam players’ energy depleted, preventing them from finding an equalizer.
They even conceded another goal in the 94th minute to Mohammad Hosseinnezhad.
The 1-3 loss eliminated Vietnam from the tournament as Australia thrashed Qatar 9-1 in the other game of Group B to advance to the quarterfinals with Iran.
