Vietnamese female judoka Hoang Thi Tinh excelled at the Lima Panamerican Open 2024 in Peru on early Saturday morning (Vietnam time), earning sufficient points to secure a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
On the first day of competition, Tinh, ranked 98th in the world, secured victories over Diaz Martina of Chile, ranked 159th, and Solis Jacqueline of Guatemala, ranked 65th, in the women’s 48kg weight class to advance to the final.
With these wins, Tinh earned enough points to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, based on the continental quota system.
Each weight class at the Paris Olympics allocates 17 spots to top-ranked judokas globally.
For Asia, there are 10 spots available per event.
Tinh secured the ninth spot in the women’s competition with a total ranking score of 213.
In her weight category, other Asian competitors include Khalimajon Kurbonova of Uzbekistan, ranked second with 2,652 points, Lin Chen Hao of Taiwan, ranked third with 1,996 points, and Wong Ka Lee of Hong Kong, ranked seventh with 743 points.
On the second day of competition, Tinh will face Priscilla Morand of Mauritius, ranked 43rd in the world.
Tinh’s qualification marks Vietnam’s final official ticket to the 2024 Olympics, surpassing its goal of securing all 12 spots for the Paris Games by one.
Among the other 12 Vietnamese athletes qualified are swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, cyclist Nguyen Thi That, markswomen Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen, boxers Vo Thi Kim Anh and Ha Thi Linh, weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh, canoeist Nguyen Thi Huong, rower Pham Thi Hue, badminton players Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Thuy Linh, and archer Le Quoc Phong.
Vietnam awaits decisions from the Olympic organizing committee regarding special spots for Tran Thi Nhi Yen in athletics and Vo Thi My Tien or Nguyen Thuy Hien in swimming.
