An ornamental plant exhibition and competition for the Central Highlands and central regions is taking place in Quy Nhon City under Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam until August 29, featuring more than 1,300 bonsai and ornamental trees.

Crowds thronged the Binh Dinh Convention Center in Quy Nhon on Sunday to feast their eyes on various spectacular ornamental plants and bonsai grown by domestic bonsai artisans.

This is the largest-ever ornamental plant exhibition in the city, with many highly valuable bonsai, said the organizer of the exhibition, which opened on Saturday.

Apart from the trees on display, more than 180 works of bonsai art were registered for the competition.

Among them are centuries-old trees and bonsai in unique shapes.

Nguyen Thanh Nam, a resident of Quy Nhon, said that the exhibition is delighting visitors with numerous charming and gorgeous bonsai and ornamental plants.

“I was impressed by a series of ancient cedars and Streblus asper trees, many of which are worth tens of billions of Vietnamese dong. They are extremely attractive,” Nam said.

Artisan Nguyen Duy Toan, who resides in Quy Nhon, and is the owner of a 700-year-old Streblus asper, said that he bought the tree five years ago from a farmer, and then took care of and pruned it into the current bonsai which looks like Duong Long Towers, considered a special national architectural and artistic relic.

“I do cherish the tree,” Toan said.

Nguyen Tuan Thanh, vice-chairman of the Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee, said that the event acts as a convergent venue for gardeners and bonsai artists nationwide to network.

“Such an interesting event gives ornamental plant and bonsai aficionados a chance to admire a variety of one-of-a-kind trees,” Thanh underlined.
