Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam has been rated the world’s cheapest long-haul venue for British travelers for the first time, outdoing many other rivals, according to the latest ranking report by the UK’s Post Office.

Ranking right after Hoi An is South Africa’s Cape Town, which held the top spot last year.

After 18 years of the annual Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, this year’s edition marks the first time that Hoi An has topped the list of the world’s least expensive long-haul destinations for British tourists, surpassing Bali in Indonesia, Penang in Malaysia, and Phuket in Thailand.

Moving up from the sixth place last year, Hoi An is “one of only eight destinations to combine lower local prices (down 14.4 percent in Hoi An) with falling currency values,” the report said.

The recently-issued 2024 report ranked 40 global travel destinations from least to most expensive, based on the average price of eight popular tourist items in these places.

These items include a cup of filter coffee at a café/bar, a bottle of local beer/lager (330ml) at a café/bar, a bottle/can of Coca-Cola/Pepsi (330ml) at a café/bar, a glass of wine (175ml) at a café/bar, a 1.5-liter bottle of mineral water at a supermarket, suncream (200ml spf15) at a supermarket, a three-course evening meal for two (including a bottle of house wine).

According to the report, the average total spending of a Briton on these eight items when traveling to Hoi An is estimated at about U$64.

In Hoi An, British travelers can pay only $1.5 for a bottle of local beer/lager, $1 for a bottle/can of Coca-Cola/Pepsi, $4 for a tube of sunscreen, and $50 for a three-course evening meal for two.

Ranking right after Hoi An is South Africa’s Cape Town, which held the top spot last year.

The South African city was knocked out of the highest position because of a five-percent price increase, causing the average spending of the said items to climb to $68.

The third, fourth, and fifth places went to Kenya’s Mombasa, Japan’s Tokyo, and Portugal’s Algarve, with the average costs of $69, $74, and $75, respectively.

At the bottom of the ranking is Costa Rica’s Tamarindo, where the average spending amounts to $170, followed by New York City.
