Vietnam has fallen four notches to 72nd in its ranking in the Global Enabling Trade Index (ETI) this year compared to two years ago, according to a report from the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Among the four sub-indices used for the calculation of the result, including market access, border administration, transport-communications infrastructure and business environment, the sub-indexes of transport-communications infrastructure and business environment saw a decline from the rankings of 56th and 69th in 2012 to 60th and 81st in 2014, respectively, while the remaining factors saw an increase.

Compared to the 2012 rankings, the sub-indexes of market access and border administration in 2014 rose to 34th and 86th, respectively.

Data breakdowns showed falls in the two sub-indices of the availability and quality of transport services and the availability and use of ICTs, from 28th and 60th in 2012 to 50th and 64th in 2014, respectively.

Vietnam ranked 68th out of 132 surveyed countries in 2012, ranked 71st out of 125 survey countries in 2010, and ranked 89th out of 121 surveyed countries in 20009 – the first year the ETI was announced.

The ETI, conducted by WEF in 138 countries worldwide every two years, assesses the quality of institutions, policies and services facilitating the free flow of goods over borders and to their destinations.

As a widely used reference, the report helps economies integrate global value chains and companies into their investment decisions. It informs policy dialogue and provides a tool to monitor progress on certain aspects of global trade, said WEF.
