Along National Highway 31 in Chu Town, Luc Ngan District under the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Giang, there have been thousands of motorcycles transporting lychees to purchase points over the past few days before they are exported to China.
The red of the road created by lychees has painted a unique picture in the district, considered as a hub of the fruit in Vietnam.
This year, the lychee harvest season spans from June 5 to July 20.
Undergoing a slew of steps from processing, and cleaning, to soaking lychees into icy water, they are boxed and sent to border gates.
Nguyen The Thi, vice-chairman of the Luc Ngan administration, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the district has over 17,000 hectares of lychee cultivation.
Luc Ngan is expected to harvest a staggering 98,000 metric tons of lychees this year.
The prices of lychees ranged from VND17,000 (US$0.72) to VND33,000 ($1.4) per kilogram on June 18.
Over 34,000 metric tons of lychees have been consumed in the district.
“I am sure that no localities have harvested as many high quality lychees as Luc Ngan District. We have launched regular inspections into growing area codes and the packaging process to ensure the quality of the fruit,” Thi said.
Lychee farms are fruitful in Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang Province, northern Vietnam. When lychees are ripe, either traders will come to gardens to harvest them, or farmers will pick the fruits and transport them to purchase points. A photo shows Vu Van Men harvesting lychees at his organic lychee garden. Men said that as his lychees meet VietGAP standards, the price of each kilogram will be VND5,000-10,000 higher than others.
