Budget airline Vietjet Air has announced the launch of a direct air route linking Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi and Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, witnessed by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other officials of the two nations.

The launch ceremony was organized in Jakarta on Monday on the occasion of the Vietnamese premier’s ongoing visit to Indonesia to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which will last until Thursday, at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Hanoi-Jakarta air link is Vietjet’s fourth non-stop air route connecting the two nations, said Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vietjet vice-chairman.

The launch of the direct air route is aimed at spurring the connection between Vietnam and Indonesia, and opening a wider door for economic growth, Hung said.

With four weekly flights on the new air route between Hanoi and Jakarta, Vietjet will raise its total number of flights between the two countries to 92 a week, starting from December.

The air carrier is moving toward transporting one million passengers per year on direct flights connecting Indonesia and Vietnam, contributing to advancing the strategic partnership between the two nations, and making it a bridge for cultural exchange and economic cooperation.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien offered congratulations on Vietjet’s launch of the new air route, saying that the air service will strengthen the investment cooperation between the two nations.

The Hanoi-Jakarta air route was announced when the two nations celebrate the 10-year anniversary of strategic ties this year.

Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said that the launch would help leverage air connectivity between Vietnam and Indonesia.

A strong air route network will smooth the path for partnership in various fields between the two nations and in the region.

“I hope that Vietjet flights will bring lots of Indonesian and Vietnamese tourists to the two nations’ popular destinations,” said Minister Uno.

Earlier in May, Vietjet opened a direct air route linking Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta, Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reported.
